Spooky Short Stories with a Soft Edge

Mimi’s Tales of Terror might not be the goriest or most unhinged Junji Ito collection, but that’s exactly why I liked it. It’s eerie without being overwhelming, and it’s made up of bite-sized horror stories that feel like urban legends passed around at sleepovers. If you’re new to Junji Ito, or just prefer a lighter scare, this is a really accessible place to start.

The stories follow Mimi, a young woman who keeps stumbling into weird, cursed, and unsettling situations. Think ghosts in tunnels, cursed homes, and strange neighbors; it’s like a creepy anthology wrapped up in a slice-of-life format.

What I Liked:

  • The low-key horror vibes made it perfect for a casual read.

  • Loved the mix of urban legends and subtle spooks.

  • Mimi, as a recurring character, added cohesion that most short story collections lack.

What I Didn’t Love:

  • Not every story landed; some felt a little undercooked.

  • If you’re hoping for full-on body horror or mind-bending twists, this one might feel too “light.”

My Rating:

 3.5/5

Perfect for when you want creepy, but not cursed-for-life levels of horror.
